Faith, hope, and love are called theological—or basic—virtues because so many other virtues depend on them. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that "the theological virtues … are infused by God into the souls of the faithful to make them capable of acting as his children and of meriting eternal life.
In this second iteration of faith, hope, and love to the Thessalonians, Paul regarded faith and love as our breastplate. A breastplate defends the heart, the source of faith and love. Hope is a helmet, armor which protects the head. Hope of salvation is the intellectual core of our redemption-God's promise of what we will be.
We are called to be many things as Christian—generous, hospitable, disciplined, respectful. Each biblical characteristic is important and should be pursued wholeheartedly. But there is one set of characteristics—a triad of traits—that is foundational and essential: namely, faith, hope, and love. If we do not have these, we do not have Christ.

These "theological virtues" are derived from St. Paul: "so faith, hope and love remain, these three: but the greatest of these is love (I Cor. 13:13). Along with what St. Ambrose calls the "cardinal" virtues (prudence, temperance, fortitude and justice/benevolence) these form the bedrock of virtues ethics.
Faith, hope, and love are the three gifts that will be ours throughout all eternity. And agape love is the ultimate gift. God in His goodness gives us the privilege of possessing these gifts today, and we look forward to having them remain with us forever.

The three things Paul saw are familiar to many Christians: faith, hope, and love. First, Paul was thankful because of their faith in Christ Jesus. They heard the word of the gospel and in response they put their faith in Jesus. They had a real relationship of trusting love in Him.

Faith and hope are distinct yet related. That there is a difference between faith and hope is evident in 1 Corinthians 13:13, "Now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." Two of the three greatest gifts are faith and hope, listed separately.
